Young Radio Operators Prepare for Remote Island Expedition

Another upcoming event is attracting attention because of its emphasis on younger amateur radio operators. The ARRL announced funding support for the planned VK9XY DXpedition to Christmas Island, scheduled for November 16 through December 4. Ten of the 12 participating operators are under the age of 26. Organizers also plan to allow as many as 40 younger radio amateurs around the world to participate remotely using an internet-connected radio system. The project will give operators an opportunity to experience long-distance international radio communication from a location that can be difficult for other stations to contact.

The ARRL also announced support for a planned March 2027 DXpedition to South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic. The expedition is expected to provide opportunities for radio operators to contact a relatively rare location while giving younger participants experience with challenging portable radio operations.
