Ham Radio Operators Help Support the Chicago Marathon

Amateur radio volunteers also played a role in one of the nation’s largest sporting events this month. During the October 11 Chicago Marathon, 165 amateur radio operators from six states helped provide medical communications and logistical support for an event involving approximately 55,000 runners. According to the ARRL, 100 operators were stationed at medical tents along the course and helped relay requests involving patient transportation, medical supplies, and other needs. The volunteers used an established network of repeaters, including portable UHF equipment, to maintain communications with a central command location in Grant Park.

The volunteer operation included both traditional FM radio and digital mobile radio (DMR). Organizers also introduced a separate Zoom connection that allowed medical personnel to hold private consultations when necessary. Ham Radio Chicago coordinated the amateur radio activities, continuing a tradition of volunteer participation at the marathon. The event demonstrates how amateur radio can be used alongside modern communications systems to support large public gatherings.
